London Festival of Architecture announces events
11 June, 2010
The organisers of the London Festival of Architecture 2010 have announced details of some of the 300 events taking place between 19 June and 4 July. The biennial festival promises to be a celebration and exploration of buildings, streets, spaces and places in the capital, including exhibitions, debates, dance, street markets, workshops, talks, parties, guided walks, and bicycle and boat tours around London.
Since it began in the 2004 as the London Architecture Biennial, the festival has positioned itself as an inclusive event, which aims at bringing architecture to a wider audience.
'Everyone is invited to join the Festival community, to develop projects to take part in debates; to investigate ways that London can be made a better place to live, work and play; to explore the city through guided walks and bike rides and to examine change in the capital in a celebratory way,' say the organisers.
One such inclusive event is Love Your Street, will bring together building and landscape professionals with local communities to improve streets, spaces and places across London.
This year's festival will focus on the Olympics in 2012, looking at the ways in which planners, architects and local communities play their part in the development of 'The Welcoming City'.
The area of East London between Whitechapel and Stratford will host an event called High Street 2012, which will examine the effect of urban regeneration on the area surrounding the Olympic site. This area will also host a new commission from critically acclaimed Austrian architects Feld72, which has revived a vacant town centre building, and tours on Routemaster busses.
